Why Making Lifestyle Changes Is Necessary for Weight Loss Success

Thursday, October 15th, 2020

Lifestyle changes are an absolute necessity when it comes to weight loss. In fact, the biggest reason that people fail in meeting their weight loss goals is that they do not make any changes to their lifestyle as a whole. Most diets are focused on fast weight loss through means that aren't meant to be kept up for long periods of time. So where is the balance? Here’s what you need to know about building lifestyle changes for weight loss success.

Lifestyle changes allow you to maintain your weight loss.

When you make lifestyle changes rather than just going on a fad diet, you are able to better maintain your weight loss after the diet ends. A diet is something temporary to lose weight, but lifestyle changes are designed to be long-term solutions to managing weight over time.  (more…)

Why Are Preventative Screenings So Important?

Thursday, December 20th, 2018

Preventative screenings are essential for your lasting health, yet they are commonly overlooked. Not only are they simple, painless, and affordable, but they actually have the power to save your life. Statistics indicate that if every adult in the United States received the recommended preventative screenings for their age, more than 100,000 lives could be saved each year. Why would you pass on that opportunity for yourself?

What Are Preventative Screenings?

A preventative health screening evaluates your health to determine whether or not you are at risk of a certain disease or condition. Screenings can assess everything from bone and breast health to colorectal and reproductive health.

Some screenings, like a prostate exam, are specifically for men, while others, like a mammogram, are only for women. If a preventative screening detects a problem, it gives you the opportunity to make lifestyle changes, take medications, and/or begin treatment in order to prevent a serious illness from threatening your well-being.

The Importance Of Screenings Increases With Age

All adults are strongly encouraged to receive preventative health screenings based upon the most common diseases and conditions for their age group. For men, these include blood pressure, cholesterol, colorectal cancer, and prostate screenings.

The list is slightly different for women, with the mammogram and pap smear replacing the prostate exam. Once adults hit age 65, their bodies are at risk of other problems that require screenings like osteoporosis, pneumonia, and glaucoma. (more…)

Lose Weight Easily With These Small Changes

Monday, December 10th, 2018

Nobody associates the words “weight loss” with “easy.” For most people - maybe yourself included - weight loss is a challenging journey blocked by obstacles of all kinds. But dropping pounds and staying healthy shouldn’t be hard!

The truth is that there are plenty of small, simple steps you can take to reach your weight loss goal. And even though you won’t find “eat chocolate cake in bed” on that list, really are easy enough to work into your regular routine without upending your sense of balance and comfort.

Sleep More, Period.

You probably weren’t expecting to see sleep on a weight loss tip list. Believe it or not, your quality of sleep has a huge impact on your ability to lose weight, because sleep gives your body the chance to recover, heal, and rebuild.

Two of the hormones that get released as you sleep are the hormones that helps burn through fat and the hormones that signals satiety after eating. If you are only sleeping three or four hours a night, your body will not be able to release those hormones efficiently, and your extra weight will continue to stick around. More sleep equals more weight loss! (more…)

Heartburn or Heart Attack? When to Worry

Saturday, November 10th, 2018

A burning painful sensation in your chest, an uncomfortable pain in your back and shoulders. Is it just heartburn and sore muscles? Or is it something more serious like a heart attack? How do you know when you should go to the immediate care/emergency room for chest discomfort? The symptoms for heartburn and a heart attack are oftentimes very similar, but there are some distinctions that may be able to put your mind at ease.

Heartburn occurs when stomach acid backs up into your esophagus and causes a burning sensation in your upper abdomen and chest. Usually, heartburn will get worse after you have eaten a large meal and when you lay down. Heartburn may wake you up when you sleep, and you may taste or feel acid coming to the back of your throat. The symptoms of heartburn may be alleviated when the person takes an antacid.

Heart Attack

The symptoms of a heart attack can often manifest differently from person to person, and especially from men to women. Men generally have the most commonly known symptom of a heart attack, which is an intense chest pain coupled with shortness of breath. Women, on the other hand, often experience chest pressure accompanied with an aching sensation that may spread to the neck, jaw, back and shoulder area, shortness of breath, and nausea/vomiting. People have also been known to get light-headed, feel fatigued, and break out in a cold sweat. (more…)

Summer is almost here and we at Suncoast Urgent Care want to remind you of some summer safety tips that will help keep you and your family healthy and safe all summer long.  Here in Florida, these tips are helpful year ‘round, but they are especially important during the heat of the summer.

1.  STAY HYDRATED: Keep that water coming!  Drink plenty of water or other non-alcoholic beverages.  Staying cool and hydrated will help prevent heat stroke and other heat related conditions.

2.   WEAR SUNSCREEN: Protect your skin from harmful UV rays by applying sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher several times throughout the day.  And don’t forget your lips...lip balms with SPF 15 or higher will protect your lips from the damaging rays.  Re-apply both after swimming or other water activities.

3.   CLOTHING: Three "Ls":  Lightweight. Light colored. Loose. The “Three Ls” help to keep you cool and to protect you from the sun.  A hat will also keep you cooler and offer your face/neck some skin protection.

4.   FOOD/GRILLING: Bacteria in meats and other foods will grow faster in the heat.  Keep foods cool at home and when away from home, store perishable foods in a cooler with ice/ice block. Be sure to cook meat fully.  After meals, quickly return leftovers to the cooler or refrigerator.

5.   POOL SAFETY TIPS: As you already know, never swim alone and always have an adult supervise children when swimming or near a pool or body of water.
